Vava'u and the other 40 odd islands that make up this stunningly beautiful group, in the north of the Kingdom of Tonga archipelago, is a very special piece of paradise. Now easily accessible from Tongatapu, Fiji and Samoa through airline connections. Vava'u, to its advantage, still remains off the beaten track of mass tourism South Pacific travel routes. This is a place where you can be free to be yourself. Where pressures are washed away by the gentle lapping of the sea on stunningly beautiful white coral sand beaches and the whisper of the trade winds through lush green coconut plantation.
On the main island of Vava'u is located the group's tiny capital of Neiafu perched above Port of Refuge Harbour, unquestionably one of the most spectacular and beautiful natural harbours in the world. Neiafu and its surrounding villages are home to about a third of the Vava'u Islands overall population of about 20,000. The majority of the Vava'u people live in small villages dotted on islands throughout the group. Situated at Neiafu are all the government agencies including the hospital, customs and immigration departments, police headquarters, the post office and a variety of small shops, two supermarkets and the region's fresh produce market. The climate in Vava'u is very pleasant being year round slightly cooler and less humid than most neighbouring countries in similar subtropical latitudes. The temperatures range between 18-25 degrees Celcius during April through October and 24-32 degrees Celcius between November and March. Trade winds blow a fairly constant 13-18 knots during winter month with the breeze being more light and variable during the summer. At times the lush verdant islands attract passing rainclouds and on such occasions the skies open up with breathtaking tropical downpours giving everyone an enjoyable cooling rainbath. Apia, the lively capital of Samoa, sits on the north coast of Upolu island and blends the island’s rich traditions with a laid-back charm that’s hard to miss. Once a small village, Apia has grown into a central hub where local culture, commerce, and history meet. Along Beach Road, colonial buildings from the early 1900s still stand, including the old Courthouse, now a cultural center. From bustling markets to quiet waterfronts, Apia offers visitors a chance to experience Samoa’s rhythm at their own pace. For a glimpse into daily life, the Maketi Fou (Fugalei Market) is where Apia truly shines. It’s the go-to spot for fresh produce, handmade crafts, and locally made snacks. Stalls overflow with bananas, breadfruit, taro, and bundles of Samoan cocoa. Visitors can try panikeke (Samoan pancakes), sip on a young coconut, or chat with weavers creating fine mats and tapa cloths. A visit to the Cook Islands is not complete without seeing the beautiful island of Aitutaki, 220 km north of Rarotonga and less than an hours flight away. Aitutaki is the second most visited of the magical Cook Islands and is recommended as a "must see" extension of any Rarotonga holiday. Day trips are also popular.
Partly volcanic and (in parts) of atoll origin, its highest hill, Maungapu (124 meters) is said to be the top of Rarotonga's Raemaru Peak brought back by victorious Aitutaki warriors. Its large and spectacular lagoon (45 kms round) teems with colored fish of many varieties and many small and charming uninhabited islands (motus), are sprinkled along the fringes of the outer lagoon. This is a place of great natural beauty and tranquility, where crystal clear waters and swaying palms provide a simple tonic to sooth away the pressures of the outside world. With the arrival of Reverend John Williams, Aitutaki became the first island to receive Christianity back in 1821. The first Polynesian explorer was Ru from Raiatea in the Society Islands, while Captain William Bligh of "Bounty" fame is credited with being the first European to sight the island in 1789. Aitutaki was also a favorite stop for whalers in the 1950's and in 1888 the British flag was raised and Aitutaki and Rarotonga were included in the boundaries of New Zealand. Raiatea is the only island in French Polynesia with a navigable river, the Faaroa River, where visitors can take guided kayak or boat tours surrounded by dense tropical vegetation. For adventurers, Mount Temehani offers hiking trails and a chance to see the Tiare Apetahi, a rare flower that grows only on this island and has become a symbol of Raiatea’s uniqueness.
